Worst of the Month: May 2014

I have a Best of the Week article series, but as we know, there are a lot of bad moments in professional wrestling. To commemorate all of these terrible moments, I decided to start a Worst of the Month series. To be optimistic, I decided to focus on the worst of the month, instead of going week by week like I do with the best things. So, here we go with the worst of the month:

10. Arm Wrestling Contest- On an episode of Main Event, Cesaro and Mark Henry were scheduled (kayfabe) to have a match. Instead, they had an arm wrestling contest. Let it be known that arm wrestling is not a main event, let alone a match at all. Arm wrestling contests are never entertaining, though the aftermath may be.

9. Batista's Issues- It may not come as a big surprise to you, but Batista has some issues with the WWE. It stems with the fact that the fans completely rejected his return, even though he was depicted as the returning hero. That led to him losing his shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania. In fact, he refused to put Daniel Bryan over at Payback. This could lead to further troubles for the creative team if he keeps rejecting their plans.

8. Natalya's Painting- On Total Divas, we saw Natalya's wedding gift to Brie Bell and Daniel Bryan: a horrible painting of the couple with their dog. If you don't watch Total Divas, let me tell you, that painting was bad. The weird thing: Natalya thought it was great. But the worst part about the situation: they tried to turn it into a storyline, which went absolutely nowhere.

7. Ric Flair Endorsing the Shield- In a very publicized return, Ric Flair went on Raw and endorsed The Shield. Not only that, he said that they exemplified power, style, and grace. Really? The Shield are stylish and graceful? Sure, the leather looks cool, but the epitome of style? That's a little much.

6. Too Many Squash Matches- Right now, there are three undefeated superstars in the WWE: Adam Rose, Bo Dallas, and Rusev. Rusev and Rose are the only ones who have had a feud (even if they were small ones). However, since they are new superstars, they're not going to lose. Sure, they look dominant, but having so many squash matches can get boring.

5. Sandow in Costumes- Damien Sandow is a great talent. He's good on the mic, is over with the audience, and is good in the ring. Unfortunately, the WWE refuses to make use of his talent. Instead, they've made him a low midcarder. Now, he's started dressing up in costumes. First, it was Magneto, then Sherlock Holmes, and most recently, Davy Crockett. Let me ask the simple question: why? It's a waste of talent.

4. Signing Issues- Sting has reportedly been in talks with the WWE for a few months now, but no deal has been officially signed yet. What was originally being seen as a sure thing is now in doubt. There have also been rumors that Kurt Angle would like to return but Vince McMahon does not want to sign him, which of course makes perfect sense. Why would you want to resign the only Olympic champion in WWE history?

3. Brie Bella's Screaming- Contrary to what Brie might think, she cannot act. This was on full display in the Raw after Extreme Rules. While she and Daniel Bryan were running from Kane, she screamed continuously. It seemed like it would never stop.

2. Ending to John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt match at Extreme Rules- The match itself wasn't great but it's the ending that makes the list. After taking out all three members of  the Wyatt family, Cena went to escape the cage. At the door, he was met by a kid with a weird voice. Cena was so startled he let himself be taken out by Wyatt. Afterwards, Wyatt hugged the boy, whom he called "John". If he was supposed to be a young John Cena or something else, we don't know. Thankfully, we never found out, as the whole thing was dropped. But the ending was so gimmicky that it makes this list at number 2.

1. Daniel Bryan's Injury- As bad as the ending to the Wyatt/Cena match was, reality takes the top spot in our inaugural Worst of the Month list. After Bryan's tough climb to the top of the mountain, something which would not have been possible without the fans, he had to get neck surgery and be out of action for a number of weeks. He was supposed to have a Buried Alive match at Payback, but maybe that will get pushed to Money in the Bank. Let's hope he gets better soon.

As you can see, the month of May wasn't totally great for the WWE. They had quite a bit of moments they probably wish they can do-over. All-in-all, though, it was a good month for the WWE.
