Stars of the Night: Payback 2014
The Payback pay-per-view (yes, we can call them that again), took place two days ago on June 1, 2014. While the previous event, Extreme Rules, was mainly for tying up 'Mania feuds. Payback was supposed to have all new feuds but that didn't happen. Instead, we got a lot of repeat matches, such as Paige and Alicia Fox, The Shield and Evolution, and John Cena and Bray Wyatt. Nonetheless, it was a good event that really highlighted some superstars. In a new segment I'm calling Stars of the Night, I'm going to name the top seven stars of a show. In the inaugural article, I name the top seven superstars at Payback.
7. The Bellas- You might be a little surprised to find them on this list, but here they are. We start with Nikki Bella, who was interviewed backstage by Josh Matthews. She was decent in the interview but the main thing was that she actually got some time on the mic, which is rare for a diva. But the real reason they make the list is Brie Bella, who really got the crowd going. First she called Stephanie McMahon a bitch and then she slapped her across the face. It was undoubtedly one of Brie's biggest moments of the year. She's no longest listed as being on the WWE roster but don't expect her to be gone long. She's one of the stars of Total Divas and is a package deal with Nikki.
6. Stephanie McMahon- Another surprise entrant on the list, Stephanie makes the list just for her mic work at the event. She's been great on the mic over the last year or so, but recently she has been of the hottest heels in the WWE. Though she walked away with her head down, she still delivered a great performance. Her crowning moment came with her reference to CM Punk, that really shut the crowd up. It would be cool to see a match with her and Brie in the future.
5. Cesaro- The Swiss Superman took on Sheamus for the latter's United States Championship. It was a great match and lived up to most of the expectations. Cesaro looked very strong in this match and was very impressive. Hopefully, we will see more matches between the two in the future. The decision to not put the title was the right one. There are bigger things in the future for him.
4. Sheamus- Speaking of the United States title match, let's talk about Sheamus. While he did not look as strong as Cesaro, he still looked very impressive. The more important thing: he retained the championship. This proves his title reign is more than just a transitional one and that the WWE still has a good amount of faith in him.
3. Bray Wyatt- Yes, Wyatt lost the Last Man Standing match, but he still looked great. He showed that he can dish out punishment, take punishment, and last in a long, hardcore match. He even took time in the match to conduct the crowd while standing on the steel steps. Now that this feud has most likely ended, Wyatt can move on to other things, such as possibly a WWE World Heavyweight title bid.
2. John Cena- Thanks to his win last night, Cena wins the war with Bray Wyatt. He did so in impressive fashion. His best moment: throwing the steel steps out of the ring onto Bray Wyatt. The former WWE Champion has been on a good roll as of late, and that should continue in the days to come. Where he goes from here is a little hard to guess, but the safe bet is contending for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
1. The Shield- Make no mistake about it, the Hounds of Justice stole the show last night. Their main event match against Evolution was a very solid one that had some really great spots, including Seth Rollins's high-flying leap onto Evolution and Dean Ambrose. Not only did the Shield win, they did so in a clean sweep, eliminating all three members of Evolution without one of them getting eliminated. It was a truly big win for them.
Who else do you think was a star? Comment and let me know.
