Six Titles the WWE Should Bring Back
Ever since the World Heavyweight Championship was shelved, there are five titles in the WWE: the WWE World Heavyweight Championship (the only world championship), the Intercontinental Championship, the United States Championship, the WWE Tag Team Championships, and the Divas Championship. There are also three titles in NXT: the NXT Championship, the NXT Women’s Championship, and the NXT Tag Team Championships, but those aren't counted as official WWE titles.
But is that all the titles the WWE can have? There is definitely room for at least one more, and the addition of a title would create more storylines and give direction to some midcarders who are lost in the mix, such as Kofi Kingston, Alberto Del Rio, Dolph Ziggler, Damien Sandow, and Fandango. So what titles should the WWE add? Well, how about bringing back titles from the annals of professional wrestling? It would be an exciting new development as well as create some nostalgia for the past. So without further ado, let’s look at six titles the WWE should bring back.
Honorable Mention:
Cruiserweight Championship- This was a title that could only be won by superstars no heavier than 215 pounds. It would be interesting to see it back in the WWE, but it would be better to have a title that could be won by more superstars, not just guys like Hunico and Tyson Kidd.
Women’s Tag Team Championship- Sure, teams like Alicia Fox and Aksana, AJ Lee and Tamina, and The Funkadactyls could win it, but it wouldn't be feasible in the long run. There are only 15 Divas on the roster, having a tag team division would create a lack of competition for the Divas title.
6. Television Championship-
The Television championship was a part of both WCW and ECW. The WCW World Television Championship was first won in 1974 and retired in 2000. Some ofthe superstars who won it include Chris Jericho, Steve Austin, Lex Luger, Chris Benoit, and Booker T. The ECW World Television Championship, which was an official title from 1992 to 2000, was held by the likes of Rob Van Dam, Bam Bam Bigelow, Eddie Guerrero, Jimmy Snuka, and Tazz.
The main gimmick of a TV title was that it could only be defended on televised events, not house shows. This is a little outdated now, as only one title reign in the last many years (the tag team championship reign of Primo and Epico) has started at a house show, and that was only because one of the defending tag team champions (Evan Bourne) was about to be suspended for violating the Wellness Policy. However, the WWE could bring it back with new rules, such as stating that the champion would have to defend the title once a week. This would help dispel the claims that titles are not defended very often, especially on weekly shows.
How could the WWE introduce the title? It would make sense to have a battle royal with 40 superstars award the winner the title. Possible first champions include Big Show, Dolph Ziggler, and Sheamus. In the long run, it makes sense to give the title to guys who can consistently put on solid matches, such as Cody Rhodes, Christian, or Cesaro. Also, since the title would be defended every week, guys who normally don’t get a title shot, such as Justin Gabriel or Zack Ryder, would get that opportunity.
Another idea would be to put a time limit on the matches, say 10 or 15 minutes. That way, the champion could thwart a dominating challenger until the time is up. This would make sense if the WWE wants to keep the title reign intact, but does not want to make the challenger look weak.
5. Women’s Championship
The Divas division is in a bit of a rut right now. There is a noticeable lack of talent and personality. The arrival of Paige has helped out, but it is definitely not enough. Many people have suggested dropping the Divas title completely, but that’s not a plausible solution. The division would be even more lost than it is now. Instead, what if the WWE added a title?
The Women’s Championship was created in 1956 and lasted until 2010, when it was dropped in favor of the Divas title. Many great female wrestlers held that title, including Fabulous Moolah, Trish Stratus, Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix, and Lita. It definitely has much more prestige and history than its current counterpart, which has only been around since 2008. If the WWE brought back the Women’s title, it would automatically redeem the Divas division a little bit.
While there are some Divas lacking talent, there are also some who are quite talented and capable of holding the Women’s title. The obvious choices are Paige and AJ Lee, but Nikki Bella and the athletic Naomi could also fill that role. If the top Diva was made Women’s champion, the Divas title could be given to someone the WWE had a little less confidence in, such as Cameron or Aksana.
4. Hardcore Championship-
In the history of professional wrestling, there has never been a title like this one. When it was first introduced, it was stated that it would be defended in matches in which there were no count-outs, no disqualifications, and falls count anywhere. A 24/7 rule was also in place for a good chunk of the title's history, which meant that the title could be defended at any time as long as there was a referee.
This title was perfect for the time of the Attitude Era and ECW. Superstars like Rob Van Dam, Bubba Ray Dudley, Tommy Dreamer, Jeff Hardy, and Steve Blackman held it. Raven actually had 27 Hardcore Championship reigns, a truly incredible feat. Since the WWE is PG now, it seems unlikely they will bring back this title, seeing as how its roots are covered in blood and vicious attacks.
Nonetheless, it would definitely be fun to see, even without the 24/7 rule. It would be perfect for brawlers like Bad News Barrett, Bray Wyatt, or Sheamus. Unfortunately, we will most likely never get to see this happen.
3. World Tag Team Championship
At the end of last year, the tag team division peaked. The Rhodes Brothers, The Shield, and The Usos are some of the best tag teams in recent history, and there were also serviceable teams such as the Prime Time Players and RybAxel. Lately though, competition has dipped. The Rhodes Brothers have noticeable tension, The Shield has bigger things to worry about, and the Real Americans broke up. So now what?
One idea is to bring back the World Tag Team Championship. This is a very prestigious title, and has been held by the likes of Legion of Doom, The Hart Foundation, the New Age Outlaws, Edge and Christian, and The Hardy Boyz. It would be great to see current teams become a part of this.
The WWE Tag Team titles and World Tag Team titles would be seen as equals, but the current titleholders could fight in a non-title match for true supremacy in the division. This would also create storylines for otherwise lost superstars. It also solves the problem of true tag teams not always being on top of the division. Many times the tag team champions are superstars who have no other storylines (example: Team Hell No). With an extra set of titles, we could have top superstars (such as Batista and Randy Orton from Evolution) and a true tag team (such as Los Matadores) both be tag team champions.
Does this seem likely? Unfortunately, it does not. Over the last number of years, the WWE has unified both of the tag titles, both titles in the Divas division, and both world titles. All three of those mergers look permanent, at least for the time being. It also doesn't help that the WWE doesn't even refer to the World Tag Team titles anymore.
2. Six-Man Tag Team Championship
Adding the Hardcore Championship, Women's Championship, and Television Championship would create one new champion. Reviving the World Tag Team Championship would create two new champions. So what about making three new champions? Adding a six-man tag team championship would do exactly that.
Though never seen in the WWE, the six-man tag title was seen in both NWA and WCW. Some of the superstars who have held it include JYD, The Fabulous Freebirds, Dusty Rhodes, Ivan Koloff, and the Road Warriors. Think of the current teams that could hold this title. Big E and The Usos, Rey Mysterio and the Rhodes Brothers, The Wyatt Family, The Shield, Evolution, etc. The possibilities are endless.
This would obviously be a fun title to add. It would create new storylines and give fans an opportunity to see teams that may not have existed otherwise. Out of all the titles on this list, this is the most likely to come back. Why? There's been a lot of chatter about the idea recently, and while it may not come to fruition in the near future, at least it will be in the back of everyone's mind.
1. European Championship
Out of all the retired championships, the European Championship is one of the most prestigious. Some of the superstars who have held it: Triple H, British Bulldog, Shawn Michaels, Jeff Hardy, and Christian. It certainly would be a big deal if this title was brought back.
But why is it ranked #1 on this list? One simple reason: the Grand Slam Championship. In a previous artircle, I wrote about the Triple Crown Championship, and how a superstar needed to win a world championship, the Intercontinental title, and a tag team title to become a Triple Crown champion. If a superstar won all of those titles and the European or Hardcore titles, then they would become Grand Slam Champions. Only 12 superstars in history are Grand Slam Champions: HBK, HHH, Kane, Y2J, Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, RVD, Booker T, Jeff Hardy, JBL, Christian, and Big Show.
If this title was brought back, Triple Crown winners such as Dolph Ziggler, Rey Mysterio, and The Miz could become Grand Slam Champions. How exciting would that be? We would be able to witness history being made.
