10 Times a Rematch Clause was Successfully Invoked

In the WWE, whenever a superstar or Diva loses a championship, they get a rematch for that title. When they choose to have their rematch, it's called invoking their rematch clause. Most of the time, those rematches end unsuccessfully. There are plenty of examples of this: The Miz in 2013, The Miz, in 2011, and The Miz in 2010. (Yes, other superstars have also lost rematches). However, some rematches do end up successful, and in this article we'll look at ten that did.

1. The Corre in 2011- At Elimination Chamber, Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater beat Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov to win the tag team titles. The next day, they lost it to the improptu team of The Miz and John Cena. Miz and Cena won, but an irate Wade Barrett demanded that his stablemates be given their rematch right away. In the rematch, The Miz took out the number one contender to his WWE Championship, allowing Gabriel and Slater to reclaim their titles.

2. Wade Barrett in 2013- At the WrestleMania 29 pre-show, Barrett dropped the Intercontinental Championship to The Miz. However, the next day on Raw, Barrett hit The Awesome One will the Bullhammer to reclaim his title.

3. Daniel Bryan in 2013- At SummerSlam, D-Bry rose to the top of the WWE when he won the WWE Championship. However, his reign lasted for just a few minutes, as Randy Orton cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase to win the title. Bryan got his rematch at Night of Champions, and thanks to his knees, regained the title.

4. Randy Orton in 2013- Orton was understandably bummed after losing his title at Night of Champions. He got a rematch at Battleground, but that match ended in a double draw after interference from Big Show. So, the rematch was moved to Hell in a Cell, with Shawn Michaels as referee. Thanks to a superkick from the ref, Orton walked out with the WWE Championship.

5. John Cena in 2011- At SummerSlam, CM Punk and John Cena squared off to determine the true WWE Champion (both men were considered the champion at this point). Punk won, but lost the title to Del Rio minutes later when ADR cashed in his Money in the Bank. Cena earned the right to face Del Rio for the title at Night of Champions and successfully invoked his rematch clause.

6. Alberto Del Rio in 2011- After losing the title at Night of Champions, Del Rio was given his rematch at Hell in a Cell, where he and Punk would challenge for Cena's WWE title. The Mexican Aristocrat won the match, not only giving him the WWE Championship but also making him the first superstar to win a Triple Threat Hell in a Cell match.

7. John Cena in 2009- At Elimination Chamber, Edge attacked Kofi Kingston and took his place in the Elimination Chamber match for Cena's World Heavyweight Championship. Edge won, and Cena was given his rematch in a Triple Threat Match against Edge and Big Show at WrestleMania 25. Cena won the match, giving him his second World Heavyweight Championship.

8. John Cena in 2010- At Elimination Chamber, John Cena won the WWE Championship, but was forced to defend it immediately against Batista. The Animal won, setting up a rematch at WrestleMania 26, which Cena won.

9. Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes in 2008- On an August episode of Raw, Rhodes and DiBiase dropped the World Tag Team Championship to the team of John Cena and Batista. A week later however, the former champs reclaimed their tag team titles.

10. Randy Orton in 2007- At the beginning of No Mercy, Orton was awarded the vacant WWE Championship by Mr. McMahon. However, he dropped it almost immediately to Triple H. Later on in the evening, after HHH successfully retained against Umaga, Orton invoked his rematch clause. In the main event, Orton defeated HHH in a Last Man Standing match to reclaim the title.

There are more examples of successful rematch clauses in history, but like I said before, it's fairly uncommon. Most of the time, when a champion loses their title, that title is gone.
