The Total Package Part 3: Mic Skills
In a series of articles, I've been analyzing the five qualities a superstar needs to possess in order to be considered a total package. So far, we've looked at technical ability and the right look, now let's look at mic skills. In order to be a main event star, a superstar must either have decent mic skills or be managed by someone with them. Great mic skills tend to get fans invested into a character and generally can make a superstar's stock rise. In this article, we'll look at ten superstars who could talk the talk. Since we're focusing on wrestlers only, people like Paul Heyman and Zeb Colters are ineligible for this list.
1. CM Punk- Why not start with arguably (and in my opinion) the greatest mic worker in the history of the WWE? That seems like a good place to start. Let's start with the pipe bomb, the most famous promo of all time. That alone is enough to warrant him a place on this list. We still don't know if we will ever see him again, but we know he will deliver a great promo once he returns.
2. The Rock- The fact that he's an extremely successful actor makes his entry on this list obvious. He's one of the best trash talkers in the business and can cut a beautiful promo. There's a reason they call him The Most Electrifying Man in All of Entertainment.
3. Bray Wyatt- The Eater of Worlds is the newest entrant on this list. Among all of the superstars on the current roster, no one cuts a promo like Bray Wyatt. Plus, the content of his promos is amazing. "Follow the buzzards"? Classic.
4. Dean Ambrose- The Lunatic Fringe has been doing some of the best mic work in the business over the last two years. He was the main voice of The Shield over their run from 2012-2014 but his latest promos (as a singles star) have been pure gold.
5. The Miz- You may be surprised to find The Miz on this list, but he deserves it. His promo on the June 30th episode of Raw was great, even though it was overshadowed by the return of Chris Jericho. Hopefully, we can expect more great promos from him in the years to come.
6. Chris Jericho- Y2J is definitely one of the best talkers in WWE history. Look back to his WWE debut, his mic work was amazing. Since then, he's been delivering great promos and interviews. The fact that he's been so consistent is truly impressive.
7. The Millon Dollar Man- Ted DiBiase is one of the best heels in WWE history, a big part of that is because of his mic work. Go on Youtube and watch any of his promos in which he talks down to the crowd, they are simply works of art.
8. Edge- You may be surprised to find Edge on the list, but he deserves to be on here. His promos as a face were good, but his ones as an arrogant heel are truly great. They capture his whole attitude and persona perfectly.
9. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin- Go back to when Austin won King of the Ring and then delivered his "Austin 3:16" promo. That has now become one of the most famous and iconic promos in WWE history. That alone cemented his place in history as one of the best talkers in history.
10. John Cena- Make no mistake about it, John Cena is a great talker. Back when he was doing his "word lyfe" thing, he was churning out some great raps. Even with his current gimmick, Cena has produced some quality stuff on the mic. Sure, some of his promos can be really corny stuff, but when he gets serious, the man spits some serious fire.
Thus concludes part three on my series of the total package. Look for the next part, charisma, in the upcoming weeks.
