Wrestling Rankings for 4/23/16
In our second ever rankings, we see some movement across the board for all three promotions. All three made headlines, including TNA's financial woes, an NXT title change at a live event in Lowell, Massachusetts, and WWE's newest stars making an impact. Everything will be taken into consideration in our newest rankings. We are also introducing two new concepts: last position and weeks in rankings. These will help us better track a particular wrestler's momentum. Let's go.
WWE:
15. The Vaudevillains (Last Week: NR, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- By beating The Usos on Raw, Aiden English & Simon Gotch guaranteed themselves a match at Payback, which will mark their PPV debut.
14. Natalya (Last Week: 15, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The former Divas Champion forced Charlotte and Tamina to tap out this week, and that upward momentum carries her up a spot.
13. Sami Zayn (Last Week: 11, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The former NXT Champion lost two matches this week, including a singles match against Chris Jericho on Raw.
12. Baron Corbin (Last Week: 13, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The Lone Wolf laid out Dolph Ziggler before the two were supposed to have a match on Smackdown. Expect them to collide at Payback.
11. Kevin Owens (Last Week: 10, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- Owens finds himself out of the top 10 after coming short in the Raw main event against Dean Ambrose.
10. The Miz (Last Week: 9, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The Intercontinental Champion was pinned by AJ Styles this week and finds himself sliding down the rankings as a result.
9. Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady (Last Week: 12, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The former NXT stars defeated their rivals Bubba Ray & D-Von to set up a date with The Vaudevillains at Payback.
8. Charlotte (Last Week: 5, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The Women's Champion falls out of the top five after she tapped out to Natalya on Raw.
7. Chris Jericho (Last Week: 8, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- It was a good week to be Chris Jericho. Not only did he win a tag match with Kevin Owens on Smackdown, but he beat Sami Zayn on Raw.
6. Cesaro (Last Week: 7, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The Swiss Superman is one of the hottest superstars in all of WWE. Could this finally be the time for WWE to push him to the top?
5. Dean Ambrose (Last Week: 6, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The Lunatic Fringe beat Kevin Owens in the main event of Raw, but was taken out by a Codebreaker shortly afterwards.
4. Triple H (Last Week: 3, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The Game didn't have any televised matches this week and slips as a result.
3. The New Day (Last Week: 4, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The hottest group in WWE just keeps getting hotter. They teamed with Cesaro for a W this week on Raw.
2. AJ Styles (Last Week: 2, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The Phenomenal One bolstered his resume by beating The Awesome One on Smackdown.
1. Roman Reigns (Last Week: 1, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- This was a close call, but Reigns keeps his spot atop our rankings.
NXT:
10. Nia Jax (Last Week: NR, Weeks in Rankings: 1)- Nia Jax makes her rankings debut after running through Deonna Purazzo on NXT. At this point, it looks like we are building towards an Asuka/Nia clash at the next TakeOver special.
9. No Way Jose (Last Week: NR, Weeks in Rankings: 1)- After weeks of vignettes, No Way Jose debuted on NXT and took out Alexander Wolfe. While there is plenty of reason to be concerned about the gimmick's main-roster appeal, the man behind it is immensely talented.
8. The Revival (Last Week: 8, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- For the third straight week, The Revival was nowhere to be found on NXT. We should see them invoking their rematch clause for the tag titles soon.
7. Austin Aries (Last Week: 7, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- Aries didn't have a match this week, but his promo hinted at a rematch with Baron Corbin.
6. American Alpha (Last Week: 6, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The NXT Tag Team Champions defeated Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady to open up this week's edition of NXT.
5. Shinsuke Nakamura (Last Week: 5, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The King of Strong Style didn't have any matches this week, but he will take on Elias Samson (who fell off our rankings this week) next week.
4. Bayley (Last Week: 4, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The former NXT Women's Champion cut a backstage promo but did not have any in-ring action.
3. Finn Balor (Last Week: 1, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- In a complete shock, the NXT Champion lost his title at a live event in Lowell, Massachusetts. Some have said that he suffered an ankle injury and dropped the title as a result.
2. Asuka (Last Week: 2, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The NXT Women's Champion was nowhere to be found this week but will take on Eva Marie next week.
1. Samoa Joe (Last Week: 3. Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The former ROH and TNA star had two big victories this week. First, he beat Apollo Crews in the main event of NXT. Then, he pinned Balor to become the new NXT champ.
TNA:
10. Bram (Last Week: NR, Weeks in Rankings: 1)- Even if you haven't read the spoilers, it's fairy obvious that a departing Eric Young will be dropping his King of the Mountain title to his former tag team partner.
9. Tyrus (Last Week: 10, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- Tyrus laid out Galloway on Impact, signifying that he will perhaps challenge Galloway for the title soon.
8. Jade (Last Week: 8, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- Though she did lose a Ladder Match to become the leader of the Knockouts division, no one really knows what that means, so Jade doesn't take a big hit here.
7. Trevor Lee (Last Week: 7, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The X-Division Champion has a new ally
6. Lashley (Last Week: 5, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The powerhouse wasn't in action this week, but don't count him out for too long.
5. Michael Bennett (Last Week: 6, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The former ROH star will be taking on EC3 next week in what will probably be the biggest match of his TNA career thus far.
4. Jeff Hardy (Last Week: 4, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- The Charismatic Enigma fought his brother to a no contest this week, so it looks like this feud will continue.
3. Ethan Carter III (Last Week: 3, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- EC3 will take on Bennett next week in what should be a solid match.
2. Matt Hardy (Last Week: 2, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- Hardy ended up on a stretcher this week, but he should be good to go soon enough.
1. Drew Galloway (Last Week: 2, Weeks in Rankings: 2)- No matches for the TNA Heavyweight Champion this week, but he did get taken out by Tyrus.
Thanks for reading everyone. Check back next week for the new rankings.
