Worst of the Month: October 2014
This is my first Worth of the Month article since May. Why? Because the WWE has been absolutely fantastic since then! Of course, that's a total lie. There have been a lot of slip-ups, errors, and mistakes made by the company. I just haven't written any articles about how bad these errors have been. But, it's time for that to change. The last month was not excellent by any means. Sure, the Hell in a Cell PPV was a success, but the build-up was shaky.
The last Worst of the Month article was all about specifics, this article will be more about general problems. Rather than highlight specific incidents, I'll be talking about general things, as most of the problems are not single incidents, but spread out over a period of time. Let's get started.
10. WWE Network Subscription Numbers- Let's face it, the WWE Network Subscription numbers are disappointing. The WWE has yet to reach its goal of 1 million subscribers. In fact, they are still about 300,00 short. The WWE has gotten so desperate they've gotten rid of the six month commitment and are giving away free trials for all of November.
9. "How well do you know your bro?"- Let's face it, the tag division hasn't been great in this last month. There are only three teams right now, including the Tag Team Champions Gold & Stardust. We've seen them and The Usos go at it way too many times now. To try and spice things up, the WWE put them in a "How well do you know your bro?" segment. And yes, it was as boring as it sounds.
8. Divas Championship Gets Boring- The rivalry between AJ and Paige was supposed to rekindle the Divas division. Instead, their rivalry has gotten boring and monotonous. These two have been squaring off since April, and the feud has been dragging on.
7. Too Many Six Man Tag Matches- As of late, a pattern has developed. When the WWE has no plans for the midcard, they just put them in six-man tag matches. While the matches tend to be pretty good, it shows just how little WWE tends to care about the midcard. If they cared at all about the midcard, they would put a little effort into booking these guys.
6. Main Event Matches without a Conclusive Finish- At NOC, John Cena beat Brock Lesnar by DQ in the main event. After that, there were eight episodes of Raw and SmackDown. On all of those episodes, the main event did not have a clean finish. Nine. Main shows. In a. Row. Do you know how infuriating that is?
5. No Brock Lesnar- We haven't seen Lesnar since NOC. This man is the WWE World Heavyweight Championship (read: WWE) and he hasn't even shown up since September 21st. What happened to the 30 day rule? What was the point of giving him the title if he isn't even going to show up at WWE events?
4. Willie Mack's Release- For those of you who don't know Mack is, you're missing out. He's a very talented wrestler who has made a quite a name for himself in the indy scene. In September, it was announced that Mack had signed with the WWE. Fans were understandably very excited and started fantasy booking matches against the likes of Adrian Neville, Daniel Bryan, and Cesaro. However, Mack was released even before he showed up at the Performance Center. It's not totally clear why Mack was released, but what is clear: the WWE missed out on someone special.
3. Daniel Bryan's Health- This took the top spot last time around, and for good reason. Just weeks after making it to the top of the mountain, he was forced to vacate the WWE World Heavyweight title and sit on the sidelines for a number of months. Now, it seems that Bryan may not be back in time for 'Mania 31, which is extremely disappointing. Here's hoping Bryan makes a speedy recovery.
2. Justin Roberts's Release- Mack's release wasn't the only big release in October. Long-time ring announcer Justin Roberts was also released. This was out of nowhere, and no plausible explanation has been offered by either side. We know the WWE has been hurting financially, but this still seemed out of left field. Whatever the reason is, fans are missing the very talented announcer, whose voice will be missed.
1. Celeb Segments- It's not even close, the celebrity segments were the worst part of this month. In particular, the segment with Kathy Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. This was supposed to be a segment about breast cancer awareness, but they managed to turn it into a segment where they broke wine bottles over their rear ends. I'm not kidding. Needless to say, the crowd booed heavily for this. What guy on the creative team thought this would be a good idea? Whoever it is, they need to be fired on the spot. Then there was NeNe Leakes, who managed to be extremely annoying in the one backstage segment she was in. What was the point of bringing her in? Did that convince any wrestling fan to watch The Real Housewives of Atlanta? No, not it did not.
