Future Triple Crown Champions

In baseball, getting a triple crown means a player has led the league in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in over a season. It is an incredibly rare feat, and has only been done 17 times. In horse racing, a horse wins the Triple Crown if they win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes in the same year. Only 11 horses have ever done it.

Even in the WWE, winning a Triple Crown is a prestigious honor. It meant that a superstar had captured a world championship, a tag team championship, and the Intercontinental Championship. To this day only 25 superstars have ever achieved this. Those superstars (in chronological order) are Pedro Morales, Bret Hart, Diesel, Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, Kane, Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, Ric Flair, Edge, Rob Van Dam, Booker T, Randy Orton, Jeff Hardy, CM Punk, JBL, Rey Mysterio, Dolph Ziggler, Christian, Big Show, and The Miz.

The Miz became the latest Triple Crown winner on Raw 1000 when he beat Christian for the Intercontinental title. That was in 2012, and we are long overdue for another Triple Crown winner. Of course, not just anyone can achieve this feat. It is even harder now that it has been before, as there is only one world title and one set of tag team title now (as opposed to two of each before). In this article, we’ll look at the ten superstars most likely to become Triple Crown champions

10. Curtis Axel- Believe it or not, but Axel is only one world title reign away from becoming a Triple Crown Champion. He was a tag team champion in 2011 and was the Intercontinental Champion last year. However, it seems very unlikely that Axel will win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. He has yet to have any great matches, and is average at best on the mic.

9. Drew McIntyre- As crazy as this sounds, a member of 3MB could actually join the Triple Crown club. But to do that, he would need to work his way up to the main event level. It may seem impossible, but he is only 28 years old, so he certainly has time. A possible scenario where that happens: Vince McMahon returns to TV, fights The Authority for control, and announces his main wrestler to be the man he formerly dubbed as The Chosen One.

8. Kofi Kingston- It may not seem like it, but Kingston is a title winning machine. He's already won 10, including 4 Intercontinental titles and three tag team titles. The only thing missing from his resume is a world title reign, which at this point, seems a little unlikely. He had a great shot when the World Heavyweight Championship was still around, but now the chance of him winning a world title is much slimmer. It's certainly possible though.

7. Bad News Barrett- The three-time Intercontinental Champion recently returned to action after months on the sideline. He looks poised to become an Intercontinental Champion again this year, but that's not going to help him become a Triple Crown Champion. To do that, he needs a world title and a tag team title. At this point, Barrett is a hot superstar, and it wouldn't surprise many people if he was elevated to the main event. The real question though: can he win the title? And furthermore, can he become a tag team champion?

6. Jack Swagger- Unlike everyone else on this list, Swagger has already won a world title, but has yet to win the Intercontinental Championship or a tag team championship. The good news? Swagger looks like he will spend the rest of his career in the midcard, so he'll have plenty of chances to win those titles.

5. Seth Rollins- The aerial specialist of The Shield, Rollins has already been tag team champion. Once he embarks on a single career, he will have plenty of chances to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and Intercontinental Championship. Remember, he's only 27 years old.

4. Roman Reigns- The powerhouse of The Shield has already been pegged as a future superstar. After all, he did eliminate 12 superstars in this year's Royal Rumble. It's all but guaranteed that he will win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship within the next two years. But if he gets too popular, he may never get the chance to win the Intercontinental title. Nonetheless, he still is a great candidate to be a future Triple Crown Champion.

3. Daniel Bryan- Currently, D-Bry is one of the hottest superstars in the industry. This is his fourth world title reign, and he's already been tag team champion. Once his current reign is over, he could become Intercontinental Champion, but it's not a guarantee.

2. Cody Rhodes- This may be a surprising pick, but when you think about it, it's really not. He's a two-time Intercontinental Champion and a five-time tag team champion. But Rhodes is destined for so much more. He's a great in-ring performer, solid on the mic, and can put on great matches (example: a Falls Count Anywhere Match against Rey Mysterio at Extreme Rules 2011).

1. John Cena- Yes, it's true. The top dog in the WWE has yet to be a Triple Crown Champion. All he needs is the Intercontinental Championship. Giving him the title would definitely add some legitimacy to the title and make it more prestigious. It also seems unlikely that WWE would pass up a chance to further decorate Cena.
