10 Notes from the 4/9/15 SmackDown
The most recent episode of SmackDown took place last Thursday on April 9th and emanated from Dallas, Texas. It was a pretty good episode, but nothing really special. The main event featured a six-man tag match (it wouldn't be SmackDown without a tag match as the main event) with Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler, and Roman Reigns taking on Big Show, Sheamus, and Bad News Barrett. In this article, we'll be looking at ten specific things on the show that need a little elaboration. They'll be such things as how good the matches were, how well stories are building up, and where the WWE is going to go from here. Let's get started.
10. Dallas liked Roman Reigns- If anything, the crowd in Dallas, Texas proved that Roman Reigns is still a crowd favorite. The crowd was hot for him all evening long. While there is no guarantee that every other future crowd will love him, things are looking up for Roman Reigns. Now that fans know that Reigns is not being unconditionally shoved down their throats, they are warmer towards him. If the WWE keeps steadily building Reigns up in the eyes of the fans, the WWE Universe might one day accept him as their champion.
9. Feuding over the Intercontinental Championship- At Extreme Rules, Daniel Bryan will defend his IC title against Bad News Barrett. It looks like once that is done, Bryan will move onto a feud with Sheamus, who is currently feuding with Dolph Ziggler. We could even see a Fatal 4-Way over the title at Payback. Doesn't it seem like that's where things are headed?
8. Cameron- No Diva was more annoying in 2014 than Cameron. She can't wrestle that well, her voice is annoying, and her personality is annoying. Fans have continuously wondered why the WWE continues to employ her. However, she has impressed in certain situations, like on SmackDown. She plays her character well, and her DDTs were almost as vicious as the one Stardust gave John Cena on Raw.
7. Sheamus's New Character- Sheamus has been due for a heel turn now. His babyface character who loved to crowd was still over with the crowd, but many found it stale. His new heel character has really come into its own lately. The Celtic Warrior may be a fighter, but he is also doing well as an arrogant heel. Soon, we may see Sheamus become a contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
6. The Fall of Bad News Barrett- Ever since his fifth Intercontinental Championship reign began in January, Barrett has been booked very badly. He looked weak in the Royal Rumble and has been beaten by numerous superstars, including Daniel Bryan, R-Truth, and Dean Ambrose. On the main event of SmackDown, Barrett was pinned by Reigns. When is Barrett going to get a break? At this rate, I'm even surprised his rematch is taking place at a PPV. I thought they would just do it on SmackDown and have Bryan start feuding with Sheamus. I guess that was done to make the Bryan/Sheamus feud longer. And what happens to Barrett after Extreme Rules? My guess? He'll put Neville over at Payback.
5. The Divas Battle Royal on Raw- On the last episode of Raw, a number of Divas (including Alicia Fox, Cameron, and Natalya) coerced Kane into booking a Battle Royal for the next episode of Raw. The winner would become #1 Contender to the Divas Championship. The match would likely take place at Extreme Rules. As of right now, Naomi is the favorite to win that Battle Royal. She has pinned Nikki Bella twice in the last couple of weeks and has certainly earned a title shot. Now that AJ Lee has left the WWE, Naomi is now the #2 face Diva (behind only Paige). But even before AJ left, Naomi looked like she was still the choice to be the #1 Contender. She pinned Nikki the day after 'Mania, in a match that also involved AJ, Paige, Natalya, and Brie Bella. Also, Naomi was rumored to win the title from AJ Lee in 2014 before Aksana injured her. Now that both Bellas are rumored to be on their way out (Brie to start a family and Nikki to begin her realtor career), this could be Naomi's time to shine. Is there a possibility of anyone else winning the Battle Royal? WWE tried to portray both Natalya and Cameron as contenders, but I still think Naomi is the favorite.
4. How Good is Cesaro?- Cesaro & Tyson Kidd had a match against Big E and Kofi Kingston on SamckDown. The match didn't have any big consequences for the tag champs (it looks like their next challengers are the Lucha Dragons), but they did look impressive, especially Cesaro. The Swiss Superman put on an extremely impressive performance. He showed off both his technical skills and his raw strength. This is a man who should be competing for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. That being said, he and Tyson Kidd make one helluva team.
3. Dark Times for The New Day- Well, it seems like all those negative chants and boos have finally started affecting the most positive trio in the WWE. Big E cut an angry promo on SmackDown in which he demanded that the crowd clap along with him. Is this a sign that they will turn heel? After all, almost all of the fans want to see the crowd turn heel. It could make for some compelling television, would shake things up big-time, and would boost all three members of the group. Please WWE, turn them into a new Nation of Domination, and don't mess it up. It has the potential to be one of the best factions of the decade.
2. What's Next for Summer Rae?- During the segment between The Miz and Damien Mizdow, Summer Rae came out and chided Miz for calling himself the star of the movie, as she co-starred in the movie with him. She ended up kissing Mizdow at the end of the segment, so it's safe to say she's a face now. That was a good move on WWE's part, as the face side of the Divas division is lacking. While the heels have Nikki Bella, Brie Bella, Alicia Fox, Cameron, and Natalya, the faces have just Emma, Naomi, and Paige. Could Summer get a title shot in the future? It's not impossible, as she is a good hand in the ring and has a good personality. Once she develops a bit (both in the ring and on the mic), she could be a Divas title contender.
1. And for Damien Mizdow?- The Damien Mizdow character was absolutely fantastic. It was completely new and Damien did an absolutely fantastic job with it. He soon won over the crowd and became one of the biggest fan favorites in the entire WWE, alongside the likes of Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler, and Dean Ambrose. But now that the stunt-double character is gone, what's next for Mizdow? After all, it's the character that got him over in the first place. Once Mizdow gets past his feud with Miz, what will he do next? If he doesn't get some more character development, he could get stale really fast.
